Beloved, I wish above all things that you prosper and be in good health even as your soul prospers (3 John 3:2).Physical exercise profited little but godly exercise profited more (1 Timothy 4:8). These are two profound scriptures that communicate a direct message as to why believers have a duty to keep their bodies in good health. Never a time in history has it become so pressing for the human race to keep themselves healthier than in this present era.

Sadly a lot of believers have not been awakened to the essential role their bodies have been design to play in the fulfillment of the divine purposes of God in their life and in the earth as a whole. In the eternal scheme of events, God has always had it in mind that our bodies will become His dwelling hence he says in a certain place of us being his temple and he dwelling within us. Man must of necessity have a body so that he can function in the earth fully.

The human body is a wonderful piece of divine technology that is too precious to be handled anyhow. There are actually a lot of mysteries about this body that we are yet to unravel. However if you should get a glimpse of how vital and precious and expensive (think of how much a kidney transplant can cost) this body is in entire universe you will strive to care for it like how you will care for an expensive brand new car and here is a very interesting secret- the bible even likens our bodies to a “vessel” (Remember how apostle Paul describes women as the weaker vessels? 1Peter 3:7) – more like a vehicle; hence just like any other man made vessel it must be properly maintained so that it functions more effectively.

Think about this, what if I told you that exercise and movement is one of the ways by which we activate or put into motion certain very vital forces in the body that causes our cells to renew itself daily. For instance there is a biblical principle about Physical activity or exercise that I learnt from Dr. Don Colbert about stirring up the waters in our bodies which blessed me so much and I wish to share it so that I can drive home the point I have been trying to make all this while.

The book of John 5 : 1- 4 “Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, [a]Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, [b]paralyzed, [c]waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had”

Interestingly when I attempted to find out the meaning of the word Bethesda I discovered that among several synonyms it also stood for a house of goodness. Our body simply put is a true house of goodness because God planted goodness in our body. There is healing in your body but you will have to stir it up like how the angel moved the waters because you will realize from the scripture reading above that the people at the pool waited for the agitations of the waters, for the healing ability of the water was in its movement. This then should suddenly make us aware of how important exercise is in our daily lives because as we make efforts to vigorously move the body via physical exercises, our body which is made up of about 80% water (of which the blood is the majority) is forced to stir up and by this release healing into the body. So by this we understand that when the waters of our bodies are stirred through regular exercise healing is released.  Now if that is not a miracle in its self, then I can’t tell what will count as one. So if there is one thing that we must be conscious of then it is this, that your body is a priceless  gift from God and you must do well to care for this body like you will care for something so close to your heart.
